All About Hair Loss

Hormones and Hair Loss – Is There a Connection?

Hair loss has always been common among people living in urban areas, both among men and women. Due to the fact that this is an age old problem, new cures are being researched everyday.

Hair loss has been connected with many factors, one of which is hormones. Hormones and hair loss has always been something in discussion, especially among elder men and women. But how far hormones can cause hair loss in reality is not really known. It is still difficult to say if hormonal problems are one of the main suspects of hair loss, although experts say that it is most probably a minor cause of the problem.

In many cases, hormones are the only reason behind hair loss. And hormones and hair loss from this perspective would very much refer to natural baldness among men, which is actually the most common type of hair loss.

Hormonal Imbalance in Men

Hormones and hair loss in men is often hereditary. Among men, hair loss takes place when there is correlation between the key hormones deviating from the normal levels in the body. This would actually mean that hormones and hair loss here refers to the imbalance of hormones rather than the lack of it.

Men usually start growing bald when their scalp becomes too sensitive to dihydrotestosterone or DHT. This DHT is actually an imitative product of testosterone that makes the hair follicles anywhere around the body to shrink and eventually this prevents new hair from growing. This problem exists in women as well.

Hormonal Imbalance in Women

Hormones and hair loss in women are also related. In women, the hormonal imbalance is one of the main causes of hair loss during the periods of menopause and pregnancy. During menopause, as we know, the ovaries stop functioning and the level of the male hormone testosterone increases significantly. This is followed by the decrease in estrogen levels, and due to all this, hair loss takes place. Estrogen is known to naturally block the negative effects of androgen on your hair, and the lack of it would encourage the effects of the androgen more.

Hormones and hair loss is also related in another besides the two above, and this time it is common in both men and women. Thyroxin, which is produced by the thyroid glands, when is excessive in the body will lead to hair loss as well.
